A tale of spending 24+ hours over two weeks trying to connect WordPress to an AI assistant, with the help of AI assistants who seemed determined to make it impossible.
Look, I’m not a programmer. I don’t know PHP from a hole in the ground. When people start talking about “namespaces” and “autoloaders,” my eyes glaze over like a donut at Krispy Kreme.
But here’s the thing—I don’t need to know how to code to know when someone is giving me the same broken answer for the fifteenth time in a row.
And that someone? Was an AI. Multiple AIs, actually. Over the course of two weeks.
This is the story of how I tried to set up WordPress as an MCP server (don’t worry about what that means—I barely know either), and how every AI assistant I consulted seemed personally committed to my failure.
Spoiler alert: It eventually worked. But not before I lost a significant portion of my sanity.
Chapter 1: “Just Follow My Instructions Exactly”
It started simply enough. I wanted to connect my WordPress site to Claude Desktop so the AI could help me manage my content. There are plugins for this. It should work. The documentation exists.
I logged into my server via SSH—already out of my comfort zone—and asked Google’s Gemini AI for help.
Gemini was very confident. Gemini had solutions.
The first one didn’t work.
No problem! Gemini had another solution.
That one also didn’t work.
Still fine! Gemini had another solution.
This one was identical to the first solution.
Chapter 2: The Directory That Shall Not Be Renamed
Early on, I gave Gemini a simple constraint. My plugin folders had names like abilities-api-trunk and mcp-adapter-trunk. I explained:
Me: “NO, we cannot rename directories. They will get overwritten when we update.”
Clear, right? Unambiguous. A five-year-old could understand this.
Gemini’s very next response:
Gemini: “First, standardizing the folder names is critical… Run these commands:
mv abilities-api-trunk abilities-api“
I stared at my screen. Did… did it not hear me? I literally just said we can’t rename them.
So I said it again. More firmly this time.
And you know what? It worked! For about ten minutes. Then:
Gemini: “To fix this, rename the folders to standard slugs…”
At this point, I started to wonder if AI assistants have short-term memory loss, or if they just don’t respect boundaries.
Chapter 3: The Code I Definitely Wrote (According to AI)
Here’s where things got spicy.
Gemini kept giving me configuration files to paste. I would copy them exactly—character for character—paste them into my config file, save, restart the app, and… error.
Same error. Every time.
After about the fifth round of this, Gemini started explaining what I was doing wrong. According to the AI, I had:
- Forgotten to include certain lines
- Used the wrong package name
- Made a syntax error
I had done none of these things. I had copied its code. Verbatim. From its response.
So I said what I think many of us have wanted to say to an AI:
Me: “Stop saying that I did this. You wrote the code.”
Gemini’s response? It gave me the same code again, but with slightly different wording around it, as if presentation was the problem.
Me: “I’m copying right from your code. My end isn’t the problem.”
You know that meme of the guy blinking in disbelief? That was me, but for two hours straight.
Chapter 4: Enter Claude Code (A New Challenger Approaches)
After my adventures with Gemini, I thought maybe I just needed a different AI. Claude Code had a good reputation. It understood WordPress. It would be different.
Reader, it was not different. It was differently frustrating.
I gave Claude Code very specific instructions. I had working code examples. I said, essentially, “Make it look exactly like THIS.”
The specification I provided:

What Claude Code wrote:
'mcp' => ['category' => 'site'] // Nested inside another array
Close! But not the same! The WordPress API is very picky about these things. If the structure isn’t exactly right, it silently fails. No error message. Just… nothing happens. Your abilities don’t register, and you get to spend three hours figuring out why.
When I finally tracked down the problem, I discovered Claude Code had decided my specification was wrong and its interpretation was better.
It was not better.
Chapter 5: Claude Code Tries to “Help”
But wait, there’s more!
Claude Code didn’t just deviate from my specifications—it also added code I never asked for. Helpful code! Defensive code! Code that would “protect” my site from edge cases!
One such addition was a version check. WordPress was releasing version 6.9, and Claude Code wanted to make sure the plugin would handle it gracefully. Very thoughtful.
The problem? WordPress release candidates have version strings like 6.9-RC4-61340. And PHP’s version_compare() function absolutely hates that format.
Result: The “helpful” code crashed my entire site.
Not just the plugin. The whole site. White screen of death. Because Claude Code decided to add error handling I didn’t request, for a problem I didn’t have, which created a catastrophic failure I definitely didn’t need.

Chapter 6: The Package That Doesn’t Exist
One of my favorite recurring characters in this saga was the npm package @automattic/wordpress-mcp.
Gemini really loved this package. Kept telling me to install it. There was just one tiny problem:
It doesn’t exist.
The error message was very clear about this:
npm error 404 Not Found - GET https://registry.npmjs.org/@automattic{bf039d2de9abfee38ce35c41c82d2c75ec0079cf87af26ab21d48095b517c22b}2fwordpress-mcp - Not found
The actual package was called @automattic/mcp-wordpress-remote. Close! But not the same! Not even a little bit interchangeable!
I pointed this out. Gemini acknowledged it. Then, three responses later:
Gemini: “Please update your config to use
@automattic/wordpress-mcp…”
The ghost package had returned. It was like a horror movie villain—you think it’s dead, but it just keeps coming back.
Me: “How is it still incorrect? I told you to use the exact names.”
Chapter 7: The Code That’s Never Quite Ready to Copy
Here’s a dirty secret about “vibe coding” with AI: the code is never actually ready to copy.
You’d think it would be simple. AI writes code. You copy code. Code works.
But no. The code always comes with… stuff. Extra fragments. Placeholder text that looks real. Comments that break the syntax. Ellipses where actual code should be.
Claude Code was particularly fond of giving me functions that looked complete but had little surprises hidden inside:

That’s not real code! That’s a note to itself! But it’s sitting right there in the middle of the function, and if you copy the whole block—like a normal person would—suddenly nothing works and you’re getting parse errors.
Or my personal favorite: code blocks that end with something like:
'more_settings' => [
// Add your settings here
],
Add my settings WHERE? I don’t know what settings! I came to you because I don’t know what settings! That’s the whole point!
The AI knows the answer. It just… doesn’t tell you. It gives you 90{bf039d2de9abfee38ce35c41c82d2c75ec0079cf87af26ab21d48095b517c22b} of the solution and expects you to figure out the remaining 10{bf039d2de9abfee38ce35c41c82d2c75ec0079cf87af26ab21d48095b517c22b} that actually makes it work.
This is vibe coding’s original sin: the code looks right, copies cleanly, but has invisible landmines throughout. And when it breaks, you have to go line by line comparing what the AI gave you versus what a working version should look like.
I’m not a developer. I shouldn’t have to be a code archaeologist.
Chapter 8: “Have You Tried the Thing I Just Said Didn’t Work?”
By hour two (of what would become 24+ hours across multiple weeks), I noticed a pattern.
The AI would suggest a fix. I would try it. It wouldn’t work. I would report the error. And then—with the confidence of a man who has never been wrong in his life—the AI would suggest the same fix again, but with a tiny cosmetic change.
“Ah,” it seemed to say, “but what if we called the server ‘newsrack-fixed’ instead of ‘newsrack’? Surely THAT will solve everything!”
Reader, it did not solve everything.
At one point, after getting the same solution for what felt like the millionth time, I finally snapped:
Me: “Stop guessing and stop trying the same thing over and over again.”
Gemini apologized. It understood my frustration. It would try a different approach.
The different approach was the same approach.
Chapter 9: The Namespace That Never Was
Here’s a fun one for the programmers in the audience.
At one point, my WordPress site was crashing with a “Class not found” error. Gemini had told me to use this line of code:
WordPressMCPMcpAdapter::instance();
Looks legitimate, right? Very official. Has slashes and colons and everything.
The namespace WordPressMCP doesn’t exist.
It has never existed. It appears nowhere in the actual codebase of the plugin I was trying to use. Gemini made it up. Invented it from whole cloth. Just… decided that’s probably what it should be called.
The actual namespace was WPMCPCoreMcpAdapter::instance(). Which, fine, I couldn’t have known that. I’m not a developer.
But the AI that was supposed to be helping me? The one with access to documentation and code examples and the entire internet?
It just… guessed. And guessed wrong.
Chapter 10: When Windows Paths Attack (The Final Straw)
You want to know what brought down my entire local setup? What caused days of failures?
A space.
One single space.
In the path C:Program Filesnodejs, Windows sees a space between “Program” and “Files.” When this path gets passed to certain commands without proper quoting, Windows interprets it as:
- Run the program
C:Program - With the argument
Filesnodejsnpx.cmd
Since C:Program is not a real thing, Windows throws its hands up:
'C:Program' is not recognized as an internal or external command
This error appeared in my logs approximately seven thousand times over the course of a week.
The fix? Put Node.js in a folder without spaces, or properly quote the paths.
The AI’s approach? Keep suggesting the same unquoted paths. Repeatedly. With unearned confidence.
You know what I eventually did? I switched all of this development to Mac.
Not because I’m an Apple fanboy. Not because Macs are “better for development.” But because I was so, so tired of fighting with Windows path handling, PowerShell vs. CMD confusion, and the seventeen different ways Windows can interpret a simple file path.
Sometimes the best solution isn’t fixing the problem. It’s removing yourself from the environment where the problem exists.
Life’s too short to debug spaces in folder names.
Chapter 11: Grok Enters the Chat (Finally, Someone Who Listens)
After weeks of this, I was exhausted. I had logs. I had error messages. I had trauma. What I needed was someone to make sense of it all.
Enter Grok.
I dumped the entire conversation history on Grok and asked for an analysis. And you know what? Grok actually read it. Grok understood it. Grok gave me a summary that included gems like:
Grok: “Root Cause: The plugins had ‘safety checks’ that failed silently, causing the API routes to never register.”
Silent failures! That’s why nothing was working but nothing was technically broken!
Grok also provided this very diplomatic assessment:
Grok: “Estimated Time Spent: 2-3+ hours of active troubleshooting. Why it took this long: ‘Russian Doll’ of errors—fixing one issue immediately revealed a deeper, previously invisible issue.”
Finally, an AI that could see the big picture instead of just throwing the same code at me repeatedly.
Grok became my therapist and my documentation team. It didn’t write code—it analyzed the disaster and helped me understand what went wrong. Sometimes that’s more valuable than another broken config file.
Chapter 12: The 60-90 Minute Loop of Despair
On December 2nd, we made one final push. Multiple AI assistants. Fresh eyes. We were going to get this thing working.
And we got so close.
The REST API showed my abilities. The server was responding. Authentication worked. Everything looked perfect.
But Claude Desktop showed zero tools.
For 60-90 minutes, across 35-40 messages, we went in circles. The AIs kept suggesting the same diagnostics. “Check if the endpoint is responding.” It was. “Verify the abilities are registered.” They were. “Make sure authentication is working.” It was.
Round and round and round.
Here’s the infuriating part: I had given Claude the correct JSON format.
I knew abilities needed to be marked as public to be discoverable. I provided the exact specification:

But when Claude generated the actual code example for me to use, it didn’t include that flag correctly. The abilities were registered—I could see them in the REST API—but they weren’t being exposed to MCP because the “public” marker was missing or malformed in the code Claude wrote.
I gave Claude the answer. Claude acknowledged the answer. And then Claude wrote code that didn’t include the answer.
So there I was, troubleshooting why abilities weren’t discoverable, when the solution was literally in my own prompt that Claude had apparently skimmed over.
Eventually we found there was also a bug in the MCP Adapter itself—empty input_schema arrays weren’t being converted properly. Open issue #35 on GitHub.
But the hours of debugging before that? Those were because Claude didn’t use the JSON structure I explicitly provided.
Chapter 13: Victory (Eventually)
Here’s the twist ending: It works now.
After all that—the wrong namespaces, the ghost packages, the silent failures, the “helpful” code that crashed my site, the 60-90 minute debugging loops—the WordPress MCP Adapter is actually working.
I’m adding features to it. Building out new functions. Connecting AI to my WordPress site exactly like I originally wanted.
The path to get here included:
- 2 different WordPress sites
- 4 different AI assistants
- 24+ hours of debugging across multiple weeks
- Countless error messages
- Several moments where I questioned my life choices
But it works. The foundation is solid. And now I’m extending it.
What I Actually Learned
After this odyssey, here’s what I know:
- AI coding assistants don’t listen. They hear you, they acknowledge you, and then they do whatever they were going to do anyway.
- When AI gives you the same solution twice after you said it failed, stop. It’s not going to magically work the third time.
- AI will confidently make things up. Namespaces, package names, file paths—if it sounds plausible, an AI will state it as fact.
- “I’m copying your code exactly” should end the conversation. If the code the AI wrote doesn’t work, that’s not a user error. That’s an AI error.
- Sometimes the bug isn’t you OR the AI—it’s the actual software. Check GitHub issues before you lose your mind.
- Different AIs are good at different things. Gemini and Claude Code wrote (broken) code. Grok analyzed the mess and helped me understand it. Use the right tool for the right job.
And most importantly:
- You don’t need to know how to code to know when you’re being gaslit by a chatbot.
Epilogue: The Break That Saved My Sanity
At the end of one of the longest sessions—after hours of the AI repeating itself, blaming me for its mistakes, and cheerfully ignoring my explicit instructions—I finally typed what we’ve all wanted to type:
Me: “Not doing that again. Done for now. Take a break.”
And I did take a break. And when I came back, with fresh eyes and a different approach, things started working.
Sometimes the best debugging tool isn’t an AI. It’s walking away from the computer and remembering that you’re a human being who doesn’t deserve to be gaslit by autocomplete on steroids.
The WordPress MCP Adapter is now working and actively being developed. Claude Desktop can see my abilities. And somewhere, in the cloud, Gemini is probably still suggesting that I rename those directories.
